About Handwriting
Handwriting may be some or all of these things. For some, it is purely an art form, and the neatness and accuracy of the presentation is the main focus. For others, it needs to be a functional tool which allows them to put ideas on to paper, effortlessly and fast. Here, the look of the script is less important than the fluency of the script. For all of us, there are times when we need handwriting for one purpose and times for others.
Handwriting is a means of expressing language, just like speech, and it also leaves a lasting trace. Some call it ‘Language by Hand’. It is a physical way of expressing thoughts and ideas and a means of communicating with others.
Handwriting is a very complex skill to master, one which involves linguistic, cognitive, perceptual and motor components, all of which have to be coordinated into an integrated fashion. Although we take it for granted, some people, young and old, find handwriting very difficult to perform and feel they need help to perfect the skill. Support from those with expertise and experience is nearly always appreciated.

- It expresses the culture and civilization and all the characters of a person.
- Every 3rd school going child has problem with handwriting.
Because handwriting is such a complex skill, there are many children who have difficulty mastering it. This may cause frustration and distress and affect a child’s desire to write.
It may also cause anxiety for the parents and teachers who watch the child struggle to put his or her ideas on paper.
Not all difficulties are the same or caused by the same factors, and any assessment of the problem must take into account the age and experience of the child.
Some initial questions to ask if you are concerned about a child’s handwriting
- Has your child received any direct teaching of handwriting?
- What is the policy for handwriting in the school?
- Are the concerns about the handwriting shared by the teacher, the parents and the child?

What are the main areas of concern?
- Legibility? (All or most of the words written can’t be read out of context.)
- Neatness? (The handwriting is messy or poorly controlled.)
- Comfort? (The child is experiencing pain, strain or discomfort when writing.)
- Pressure? (All or most of the words written can’t be read out of context.)(She/he is pressing too hard or not hard enough, or pressure within one piece of writing is variable.)
- Speed? (She/he writes very slowly, producing too little writing, or too fast, becoming inaccurate.)
- Motivation/enjoyment? (She/he is reluctant to write or gives up too easily.)
